MISSION :

Dogs on Duty is a SUPPORT GROUP that was originally formed to assist, encourage and enable Service Dog/SDIT Teams, primarily veterans. As we became recognized in our community we expanded our group to include First Responders, Civilians, and then allowed Therapy Dogs and TDITs to participate. We have also allowed owners who are dedicated to socialize their working dogs or family dogs and agree to follow our protocol using the AKC CGC skill sets.

SDIT/SERVICE DOG focused Agenda that we have adopted is based on the prevalence of “FAKE” Service Dogs and Dog Owners who PAY for credentials without any formal training.

There are more POSERs out there than dogs who have been through the extensive training and socialization that is needed. Unfortunately, there are no FEDERAL regulations that mandate any specific compliance.

SDIT TRAINING:

  • Doctor’s Letter (Prescription) Recommendation for the USE OF A SERVICE DOG

  • Training hours MINIMUM =250 (PAT is 120, most programs 150) We meet and exceed the standards for a reason. Our focus is on SOCIALIZATION and your INDIVIDUAL TASKS.

  • Identify specific tasks (for example: HEARING dogs need minimum of 3 – Alert when Phone Rings, Knock at Door, Smoke Alarm sets off) EVERY HANDLER ID+S DIFFERENT (your dog may already be doing what your condition causes him to react/respond to). Please identify a minimum of 5 tasks you really need from your dog.

  • Pass AKC CANINE GOOD CITIZEN (CGC) evaluation * in order to vest up

  • Pass the AKC COMMUNITY CANINE (CGCA) evaluation.

  • Pass the AKC URBAN CANINE (CGCU) evaluation.

  • Be able to have your dog MEET the ADI/IAADP Public 14Access Training (PAT) standards. We do not test these skills but our dogs need to meet or exceed them..

Owners of businesses are allowed to ask you two things:

"IS THAT A SERVICE DOG?"

&

"WHAT TASK DOES IT PERFORM?"

Handlers should not hesitate to offer up a simple legitimate response.

One of our FIRST REQUESTS FOR ANY DOG TEAM IN TRAINING IS THAT A LETTER FROM YOUR DOCTOR BE OBTAINED.

This letter documenting

your physical limitation is

the BASIS for the USE OF YOUR SERVICE DOG.

Your SD is not just a pet

& not just your dinner date.

The Utilization of a Service Dog is controversial  when FAKE or Un-Trained dogs are presented to the public as legitimate service dogs.
